CrypticFL My laptop stopped booting up. I decided to take it apart and remove the hard drive. After inserting the laptop's hard drive into my desktop PC, I saw the following messages and did what Windows suggested. However, this did not resolve the situation. After attempting to copy important data from the disk, I experienced unreasonably long copying times which ended with an error: Following advice I found on Google, I checked the disk with the program CrystalDiskInfo, and it shows the status "Caution". Can you suggest what can be done about this and how to copy my data?
oleksandr-medvediev CrypticFL Hello. I see that you are copying the .chk files that appear after running the chkdsk command. It is advised to NEVER use the chkdsk command if you have important data on the disk and the disk is in poor physical condition. To prevent further data loss, you need to make a byte-by-byte backup of the entire disk to any other larger storage device. To do this, use reliable software. There are plenty of free and paid byte-to-byte/sector-by-sector cloning software out there. Given that the condition of your disk is not yet critical, this is what you MUST do. But keep in mind that some files may still be damaged due to bad blocks where no information was read. However, if you can afford professional help, this is the best option if you have valuable files on the disk.
