SD card not showing on laptop. - Camera says it needs formatting HELP

Hi, I was backing up my photo's from my SD card. I had to use the card reader that is in my external dvd drive because the laptop does not have a sd reader port.
My dog jumped up and the usb cable came out of the laptop. So I didn't disconnect the dvd drive as I normally do.
This morning I went to resume backing up photo's and it would now load onto my laptop.
I put the sd card into my camera and it keeps saying it needs formatting.
My husband has tried the card on his laptop and it's asking again to be formatted, but he has managed to see that the sd card shows as full (which it isn't).
I don't want to format the card as it will lose tons of photographs. I'm so annoyed as I was backing them up to avoid losing them and this happens.

Any idea what do to. Have i Lost everything?

Jaz64 Hi! Sorry for the late reply, did you manage to recover your files from the SD card? If not, we actually have a guide on what to do when a SD card asks to be formatted, it might be worth checking out.

In short, first you should check if the SD card shows up in Disk Management(Windows)/Disk Utility(Mac), and see if the reported size looks correct. If it does, the next step would be to create a full image of the card and then scan that image with a data recovery tool like Disk Drill (or any other reliable memory card recovery software) and recover the files to a different storage device. Once your data is safe, you can try to fix the card or simply format it and keep using it.

Don’t format the SD card because that will erase everything. The sudden disconnection likely corrupted the file system. Use a reliable recovery tool, like Remo Software’s SD recovery software, to scan the card and retrieve your photos. Once the files are safely backed up to your computer, you can safely reformat the card for future use.
